What are Determinants?
In linear algebra, a determinant is a scalar value that can be computed from the elements of a square matrix. It is a measure of the matrix’s invertibility and is used to solve systems of linear equations.
The determinant of a matrix A is denoted by det(A) or |A|. The determinant of a 2×2 matrix is given by the formula |A| = (ad – bc) where a, b, c, and d are the elements of the matrix. The determinant of a 3×3 matrix is given by the formula |A| = (a(ei – fh) – b(di – fg) + c(dh – eg)) where a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h and i are the elements of the matrix.
The determinant of a matrix can also be computed using the Gaussian elimination method. The determinant of a matrix is zero if and only if it is singular, meaning it has no inverse. In other words, a matrix is non-invertible if and only if its determinant is zero.
